Puzzle Storm on Lichess with Me

Puzzle Storm is Lichess’s most intense tactical training mode—a pure 3-minute sprint where you solve as many chess puzzles as possible before time runs out. Unlike Puzzle Rush on Chess.com with its “3 lives” system, Puzzle Storm is relentless: wrong answers cost you 10 precious seconds, but you keep going until the clock hits zero. It’s raw speed, pattern recognition, and mental endurance compressed into 180 seconds of pure chess adrenaline. Join me as I push my limits, share strategies for high scores, and invite you to compete for the top spots!

What is Puzzle Storm?

The format:

  • 3 minutes total – 180 seconds to solve maximum puzzles
  • No lives system – You never get eliminated
  • 10-second penalty for wrong answers – Mistakes hurt but don’t end your run
  • Instant feedback – Know immediately if you’re correct
  • Score = puzzles solved – Simple, direct measurement
  • Completely free – No premium required

The challenge: How many puzzles can you solve before time expires?

My Current Stats

Personal best: 38 puzzles
Average run: 26-32 puzzles
Success rate: ~87%
Most common mistake: Rushing through puzzles 15-20
Best session: 41 puzzles (during a peak focus moment)

The difference between a 30-puzzle run and a 40-puzzle run often comes down to maintaining focus and not panicking when you make mistakes.

Strategy for High Scores

Early puzzles (1-12): Foundation Phase

These should be automatic—basic tactics you recognize instantly:

  • Back rank mates
  • Simple knight forks
  • Pin and win combinations
  • One-move checkmates

Target: 2-4 seconds per puzzle
Goal: Build momentum, bank time for harder puzzles

Middle puzzles (13-25): Speed Phase

Difficulty increases but patterns remain recognizable:

  • Two-move combinations
  • Discovered attacks
  • Deflection tactics
  • Standard sacrifices

Target: 4-6 seconds per puzzle
Goal: Maintain rhythm, don’t slow down yet

Late puzzles (26-38+): Endurance Phase

Genuinely difficult positions requiring calculation:

  • Multi-move sequences
  • Quiet moves
  • Complex patterns
  • Endgame tactics

Target: 6-10 seconds per puzzle
Goal: Stay focused, calculate precisely

The 10-Second Penalty Rule

Managing mistakes:

Every wrong answer costs 10 seconds—devastating in a 3-minute sprint. Here’s how to minimize damage:

  1. Don’t panic – One mistake doesn’t ruin your run
  2. Calculate before clicking – 2 seconds of thought prevents 10-second penalties
  3. Trust your instincts – First impression is often correct
  4. Skip if unsure – Wait, you can’t skip! So guess intelligently
  5. Learn from errors – Review failed puzzles after each session

The math:

  • 3 mistakes = 30 seconds lost = ~5-6 fewer puzzles
  • 6 mistakes = 60 seconds lost = ~10-12 fewer puzzles

Accuracy directly determines your ceiling.

Pattern Recognition Library

Most common Puzzle Storm patterns:

  1. Back rank mates (20% of puzzles) – Rook/queen delivers mate on 8th rank
  2. Knight forks (15%) – Classic family forks and royal forks
  3. Pins (12%) – Pinned pieces can’t defend
  4. Discovered attacks (10%) – Moving one piece unleashes another
  5. Deflection (8%) – Forcing defenders away
  6. Removing the defender (8%) – Capture key defensive pieces
  7. Skewers (7%) – Attacking through valuable pieces
  8. Promotion tactics (5%) – Pawn races and promotion combinations

Master these eight patterns and you’ll recognize 85% of all puzzles instantly.

My Best Run Breakdown

38-puzzle personal best:

  • 0:00-0:45 – Puzzles 1-15 (3 seconds average) – Perfect execution
  • 0:45-1:30 – Puzzles 16-25 (4.5 seconds average) – Maintained rhythm
  • 1:30-2:15 – Puzzles 26-32 (6.4 seconds average) – Harder positions, stayed focused
  • 2:15-3:00 – Puzzles 33-38 (7.5 seconds average) – Final push, maximum concentration

Key moment: At 2:30, I had 30 seconds left and was on puzzle 35. Instead of rushing blindly, I took 8 seconds to calculate puzzle 36 correctly, which gave me momentum for the final two.

Puzzle Storm vs Puzzle Rush

Lichess Puzzle Storm:

  • No lives—keep going until time expires

Chess.com Puzzle Rush:

  • 3 lives—three mistakes end your run
  • No time penalty per se
